Class 8 Corrosive Shipping
Class 8 covers materials that meet the applicable corrosive-material definition for transportation. The class includes many acids and bases, but the correct proper shipping name, packing group, packaging, and communication always come from the exact material entry and current classification record.
Classification starts with the exact material
Do not classify a shipment from a generic term such as “acid,” “caustic,” or “cleaner.” Confirm the product formulation, concentration, physical state, proper shipping name, UN/NA number, hazard class, packing group, and special provisions using the current SDS and Hazardous Materials Table. Similar products can have different entries and different package-authorizations.
Packaging and package communication
Class 8 shipments need packaging authorized for the assigned entry and packing group. The package must be closed, compatible with its contents, protected against release in normal transportation, and marked and labeled as required. Verify the applicable specification package, inner-packaging compatibility, closure instructions, marks, labels, and orientation arrows where they apply.
Acid/base and mixed-load planning
Acids and bases can both be Class 8, but that shared class does not prove they can be loaded together. A release that allows incompatible materials to mix can generate heat, gas, or violent splashing. Check the SDS incompatibility information and the current segregation table for every mixed load; communicate any separation requirement to the carrier before dispatch.
Shipping papers and carrier acceptance
When shipping papers are required, use the complete basic description for the exact entry and include any additional information the material requires. Before pickup, confirm that the carrier accepts the commodity, package type, quantity, equipment, and destination constraints. Tell the carrier about site rules, access restrictions, and any segregation requirement early enough to plan the load.
