What is hazmat compliance?

Hazmat compliance is the work of classifying, packaging, marking, documenting, offering, and transporting hazardous materials under the applicable rules. For US ground shipments, 49 CFR is a primary source, but carrier and state requirements can also apply.

How do I know whether my product is hazmat?

Start with the current SDS and the product's transportation classification. Then confirm the proper shipping name, UN or NA number, hazard class, packing group, and special provisions in the Hazardous Materials Table before tendering.

Who is responsible for hazmat classification?

The person offering the material for transportation is responsible for ensuring it is correctly described and prepared. A carrier may review or reject a load, but that does not transfer the offeror's compliance responsibility.

What is a proper shipping name?

A proper shipping name is the regulated name assigned to a hazardous material in the Hazardous Materials Table. It is not necessarily the product's trade name or a general description from a purchase order.

What is a UN number?

A UN number is a four-digit identifier used with a proper shipping name to identify a regulated material or article. The number helps determine the correct packaging, communication, and special provisions.

What must appear on a hazmat shipping paper?

The required basic description generally includes the identification number, proper shipping name, hazard class or division, packing group where assigned, and quantity. Additional information can be required for particular materials or shipments.

When are hazmat placards required?

Placard requirements depend on the hazard class, table status, aggregate quantity, and shipment configuration. Check 49 CFR §172.504 and the specific material entry instead of relying only on a general weight rule.

What is a limited quantity shipment?

A limited quantity shipment uses a narrow exception for certain materials in qualifying small packages. It can change some requirements, but the shipper must still confirm the material, packaging, marks, mode, and carrier acceptance.

Are all small packages exempt from hazmat rules?

No. A small package is not automatically exempt. The applicable exception must be available for the exact material, and the package must meet every condition of that exception.

What is hazmat LTL freight?

Hazmat less-than-truckload, or hazmat LTL, is freight that moves with other shippers' cargo through a carrier network. It requires accurate classification and advance carrier acceptance because terminals and linehaul operations may impose material-specific restrictions.

Do hazmat shipments need a special carrier?

The carrier must be authorized and equipped to accept the specific material and shipment. Requirements can vary by hazard class, quantity, route, equipment, and the carrier's own operating policy.

Do drivers need hazmat training?

Training requirements depend on an employee's function and the shipment. A driver operating a placarded vehicle may need a hazardous materials endorsement in addition to the employer's applicable hazmat training program.

What records should a hazmat shipper keep?

Keep the records required for your shipment type, including shipping papers and training documentation where applicable. Retention periods and document requirements vary, so confirm them against the current regulation.

Can I ship damaged lithium batteries?

Damaged, defective, or recalled batteries have additional risks and may require specialized packaging and written carrier acceptance. Do not tender them under a standard new-battery process without confirming the applicable requirements.
